Rare: Yasuda Iyasō x Sen Yōdō (Collaboration) Grape Painting with Poem, Late Edo Period, Mino School, Original Ink on Paper

This is a rare painting with calligraphy of grapes, a collaboration between Yasuda Isai (安田以哉坊), who followed the Mino school of poetry, and the contemporary calligrapher and painter, Senyodo? (瞻遥洞？).

The expression of the grape clusters, achieved through bold use of ink density, showcases the free and unrestrained brushwork seen in later literati paintings. The flowing lines of the vines and the stylish depiction of the grape berries, rendered with stippling, are captivating.

This is the scroll itself, only the main painting.
Multiple seals are visible, indicating a collaborative composition.
The paper has folds and age-related wrinkles, but the brushwork remains strong and does not impede viewing.

Yasuda Isai (安田以哉坊)
1715-1780. A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period.
Born in the 5th year of Shotoku. A disciple of Gochikubo (五竹坊) of the Mino school of the Sho-mon haiku lineage. It is said he had a falling out with his master and was expelled. Thereafter, the Mino school split into the Isai school and the Saiwa school, led by Saiwabō (再和坊), who succeeded Gochikubo. Died on August 29, 1776, at the age of 66. From Mino (Gifu Prefecture). His common name was Chubei. His other pen names include Nikkyo, Sekisui-an, and Mujikū. His compiled works include Natsu no Yama.
