This CD is Volume 38 of Shogakukan's magazine series Vienna Philharmonic: Enchanting Masterpieces. It features highlights from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masterpiece opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Set in 18th-century Spain, this comedy, in which the witty servant Figaro teaches a lesson to a lecherous count, is known as one of the most popular works in opera history, brilliantly blending Mozart's characteristic lighthearted and witty music with sharp social satire.
The performance is by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the 20th-century master Herbert von Karajan. Recorded in 1978 for the Decca label, this recording is based on what was essentially Karajan's first complete recording of Figaro. The lustrous and transparent sound of the Vienna Philharmonic and Karajan's polished legato technique achieve a magnificent harmony, creating a flowing and luxurious portrayal of Mozart. The cast of singers is also top-notch for the era, and a great appeal is the ability to enjoy both the intricate ensemble work and the dramatic climaxes.
