Description  Exceptional vintage handwoven basket crafted in the traditional Appalachian/Southern folk-art style from split reed, cane, and bentwood materials. This larger example features a beautifully executed open lattice weave, reinforced bentwood rim, and elegant double-arched handle construction that immediately sets it apart from common decorative baskets.  The craftsmanship is evident throughout the piece. The maker carefully split and prepared the natural materials before weaving them into an evenly spaced openwork pattern that creates both strength and visual appeal. The rim is formed from substantial bentwood or cane sections that have been lashed together by hand using numerous wrapped bindings. These bindings not only secure the structure but also serve as decorative accents, demonstrating the basket makers attention to detail.  Particularly impressive is the handle assembly. Rather than a simple single handle, the basket utilizes multiple bent supports that rise from the rim and merge into a reinforced wrapped grip. This method required significantly more labor and skill than standard basket construction and contributes to the baskets graceful form and durability. The wrapped handle section remains one of the most attractive features, displaying the traditional techniques used by skilled basket artisans.
