Set of 6 Antique J Russell & Co Mother of Pearl Handle Luncheon Knives 1834
J. Russell and Co.
Set of 6 Antique J Russell & Co 1834 Mother of Pearl Handle Luncheon Knives Very Good Antique Condition. Expected scratches from normal use on the Carbon Steel blades. Original set of John Russell manufactured Green River luncheon knives dating between the 1880s and 1910s. The year 1834 is the date John Russell founded the company in Deerfield, Massachusetts. It is the company's official founding date trademark, not the year these knives were made. The number 12 under the name stands for 12-gauge (also listed historically as 12 Sharp), which refers to the thickness and grading of the carbon steel blade blank before grinding. NOTE ABOUT CARE: Handwash only. Do NOT use harsh metal polishes or submerge the handles in boiling water. Natural mother of pearl handles are held into the metal tangs using a heat-sensitive organic resin cement. Hot dishwasher cycles or soaking will instantly dissolve the ancient glue and cause the pearl handles to fall right off the blades. Please see photographs.
