The depth of the cap itself is set to be slightly deeper to fit Japanese head shapes. Shallow caps tend to give a casual impression, while a deeper fit suits a wider range of face shapes.
The point that the director was most particular about is the curve and length of the brim. It's a brim with a strong curve and longer length, common in sports line caps. A longer brim creates depth and makes the face appear smaller, while a stronger curve effectively covers the temples, making the width of the face appear smaller.
