Vintage Persian Ghalamzani Plate with Cranes
N/A
80.00 $
Description
This item is a small ghalamzani (galam zani, or hand-engraved copper plated with tin) decorative plate depicting cranes and other birds surrounded by an elaborate floral motif. This design was produced through background engraving (roo-zani), in which the maker outlined the main design and then flattened or hammered down the background area to make the pattern stand out. This piece's edge is scalloped and rather thick, overhanging the back of the plate. Some of the tin has worn away from raised parts of the design, revealing patchs of bright or verdigris copper underneath. Truly a gorgeous and unique piece! Measures 7.25 in diameter. Weights about 12 oz.
