【Rare】Taisho Roman Tonbi Coat, Inverness, Premium Wool, Tailored, Fukuoka
This is a Tonbi Coat (Inverness Coat), a blend of Japanese and Western style outerwear that was loved by gentlemen during the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods.
Its sleeveless design with overlapping capes allows it to be comfortably worn over the large sleeves of a kimono.
This is a custom-made piece from Nakayama Yofukuten, a long-established tailor in Fukuoka, boasting a sense of substance and elegance not found in modern ready-to-wear garments.
[Material & Craftsmanship]
• Material: Believed to be thick, vintage wool.
It has a substantial weight and excellent cold-weather protection.
• Detail: The edge of the lining reveals mimi (red and yellow stripes), a mark of high-quality fabric, indicating the luxurious tailoring of the era.
• Texture: Features the authentic texture of traditional natural wool, with a characteristic prickly feel.
[Condition]
• Exterior: Due to its age, there are a few small moth-eaten holes (marked with white circles in the photos; please zoom in for details).
The inside of the collar is frayed. Photos are provided at the end.
• Overall: Please consider this item only if you appreciate and understand vintage and antique items.
This item has been stored in an old warehouse for a long time, so those sensitive to odors should refrain from purchasing.
