Description
Scientific Name: Corydalus sp.

Japanese Name: O-ago Hebitonbo
English Name: American Dobsonflies

Hebitonbo are called Dobsonflies in English.
The origin of the name is unknown.

Corydalus is a genus of large flying insects belonging to the family Corydalidae, commonly known as Dobsonflies. They are endemic to North America, Central America, and South America, with approximately 35 known species. Species in this genus can reach a wingspan of up to 85 millimeters. They exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males possessing large mandibles used to grasp females during mating, while females have smaller mandibles. The larvae are called hellgrammites and are aquatic predators.

Corydalus is a transliteration of the Greek κορδαλο (kordalos), meaning crested lark or the flower larkspur, and appears to be related to the Greek corys (κορυ) (helmet crest). The name likely originates from the male's long jaws resembling a lark's crest or a helmet's decorative plume.

We will ship the pictured individual from Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz, Mexico. It was collected on June 9, 1988.
My measurement of the head-body length was 61mm.
