Description
Scientific Name: Corydalus sp.

Japanese Name: O-ago Hebito-mbo
English Name: American Dobsonflies

Hebito-mbo are called Dobsonflies in English.
The origin of the name is unknown.

Corydalus is a genus of large flying insects belonging to the family Corydalidae, commonly known as Dobsonflies. They are endemic to North and South America, with approximately 35 known species. Species in this genus can reach a wingspan of up to 85 millimeters. They exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males possessing large mandibles used to grasp females during mating, while females have smaller mandibles. The larvae are aquatic predators known as hellgrammites.

Corydalus is a transliteration of the Greek word κορδαλο (kordalos), meaning crested lark or the flower larkspur, and appears to be related to the Greek word corys (κορυ), meaning helmet crest. This name likely originates from the resemblance of the male's long mandibles to a lark's crest or a helmet's decorative plume.

We will ship the specimen pictured, collected in La Victoria, Veracruz, Mexico, on August 4, 2019.
I measured the body length (head to abdomen) to be 63mm. While dobsonfly larvae are commonly seen, the larvae of O-ago Hebito-mbo are considered rare.
