【Shedding Skin Specimen】Haaniella echinata Leaf Insect Mantis

Scientific Name: Haaniella echinata

Females measure 9-13.5 cm in body length.
This is only slightly smaller than Haaniella grayii, the largest species in the Haaniella genus.

The body color is primarily brown, with only the spines being green.
The forewings are characterized by highly diverse white markings.
The wing patterns vary, including heart shapes, wide or narrow V shapes, and M shapes, with individual differences.

There is no Japanese common name, but Togetoge Kareha Nanafushi (Spiky Dead Leaf Stick Insect) would be fitting. echinata is a specific epithet meaning spiny in Latin.

The eggs are the same size as those of Haaniella goliaths, and are quite large for stick insect eggs.
This species is closely related to Haaniella goliaths.

It is known that some indigenous people on the island of Borneo consume the very large eggs of the Haaniella genus. They are valued not only for their high protein content but are also said to be effective as an anti-diarrheal when cooked.

This species is considered to have the best hatching rate among the Haaniella genus, which generally has a relatively low hatching rate.

Larvae hatch in 6-12 months. These larvae, with a compact body length of 37mm, are among the largest and heaviest of insect larvae. It takes 10-12 months to reach adulthood. Consequently, they have a long lifespan; wild female Haaniella scabra have been recorded to live for over 5 years.

While relatively high humidity is required, a temperature of 20-25°C is sufficient for keeping them.
