-------------------
Shunkei-nuri is a traditional lacquerware technique that has continued for about 400 years, mainly in Hida Takayama. It is a method that uses transparent sukitsurushi (clear lacquer) to beautifully showcase the wood grain. It is characterized by its yellow and red colors and the luster that deepens with use. It is a durable, practical item finished with suri-urushi (rubbed lacquer) after applying a base coat of soybean milk to the wood, such as Tochigi or Hinoki cypress.
The main types include Hida Shunkei (Takayama City/Hida City, Gifu Prefecture), Noshiro Shunkei (Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture), and Awano Shunkei (Shirosato Town, Higashiibaraki District, Ibaraki Prefecture), which are known as the Three Great Shunkei-nuri of Japan (Nihon San Shunkei).
