★ Italian Basil Seeds - 400 seeds
Harvested in 2025
Basil is an English loanword, also known as basilico from Italian.
?? Sowing
April to May in colder regions like Hokkaido.
Mid-April to mid-June in the Kanto to Chubu regions.
April to early June in Kyushu and Okinawa.
?? Harvesting
You can harvest when the stems reach about 20-30 cm in height. Use gardening scissors to cut the required amount, starting with the tender leaves from the top. Don't forget to pinch the tip of the central stem with scissors. This is called topping and allows nutrients to reach the small buds growing between the stems, increasing your harvest yield.
Basil loves heat and grows rapidly as the temperature rises. It's easy to cultivate and harvest with little effort, making it a recommended first vegetable for home gardens. The ideal temperature for growing basil is around 25°C.
Basil, with its unique flavor, is an essential herb in Italian cuisine.
In Japan, basil was initially used as a traditional Chinese medicine, but its popularity surged with the spread of Italian cuisine.
Before that, it was recognized as an ingredient handled by professional chefs, but it became widely popular during the Italian food boom of the bubble economy era.
Rich in dietary fiber, it is also used as a dietary supplement for weight loss.
