Family Amaryllidaceae, Subfamily Allioideae, Genus Allium.

Perennial.
◎◎ One of the Five Pungent Vegetables (Gokun): counted alongside garlic, scallions, nira (chives), and rakkyo (Japanese shallots).

● Planting:
Plant in fertile soil that drains well and retains moisture, in a sunny to semi-shady location. They will multiply on their own. ^_^
They bloom from June to August, then develop bulbils around September, which fall and propagate. Shoots emerge from October to November, becoming nobiru.
They also reproduce by splitting their underground bulbs in summer.
Harvesting is typically when the plant height is about 20-30 cm.

They are a beloved vegetable that has grown wild throughout Japan since ancient times.
The underground bulbs and leaves are eaten.
?? Eat raw with miso for a sharp taste, perfect with drinks.
