The Hanai-kada (Helwingia japonica) is a deciduous shrub characterized by its flowers blooming in the center of its leaves.
It has an interesting way of bearing flowers and fruit, and its slender, cool-looking form has a certain elegance.
It blends well with natural-style gardens.
Young shoots are also edible as wild vegetables.
It prefers shade and doesn't grow too large, so it can be grown in small spaces with less sunlight or under taller trees.

- Height (at maturity): 1-2m
- Sunlight: Partial shade (morning sun is ideal)
- Watering: Prefers moist to slightly damp locations (be careful of dryness in mid-summer)
*Our parent plant is planted in a location that receives sun for half the day in the afternoon, but it is mixed with other plants like hydrangeas, and the base is shaded, so it seems to be fine.
