Karas Sansho Sapling Seedling
Karasu Sansho (Prickly Ash)
Karasu sansho is characterized by its sharp thorns and strong citrus-like aroma. With a potted seedling, you can easily start planting without damaging the roots.
Karasu sansho (Prickly Ash) is a deciduous tree belonging to the citrus family, and it is a pioneer plant that grows wild in mountainous areas and wastelands throughout Japan (excluding Hokkaido).
It grows quickly, has sharp thorns on its branches and trunk, and bears red fruit in the fall. It is not commonly used for food or medicine like sansho, and it got its name because crows are fond of eating its fruit.
Main Features and Uses: Tree Characteristics: Reaches heights of over 15 meters, with fine thorns on its branches and leaves. The leaves have a strong aroma, a mix of citrus and coconut.
Ecology: Known as a pioneer plant that colonizes clear-cut areas and wastelands early on.
Uses: Famous as a nectar plant for honey, with a slightly spicy flavor. It is also a food source for the larvae of the Graphium sarpedon butterfly.
Edible/Medicinal Use: While not typically consumed as food or used medicinally, there are instances in places like Taiwan where the leaves are used as a spice (called ci cong).
