Description
This is a handmade texturing chisel for metalworking and jewelry making.
The first and second photos show a chisel after texturing with a file and hardening.
The third photo shows the chisel being struck on a copper plate.
To make a texturing chisel, first heat the chisel until it is red hot and let it cool to room temperature. This will make it soft enough to file.
Next, use a file to create the textured pattern.
Once completed, harden the chisel. For engraving chisels, harden in water. For striking chisels, hardening in water will make them too hard and prone to chipping, so harden in oil.
Either machine oil or vegetable oil will work, but machine oil has a strong odor, so vegetable oil is recommended.
