This substrate is made by shaping natural wood into pellets.

Originally intended for reptiles, it has been used as a substrate for stag beetles and rhinoceros beetles.
It boasts high absorbency, capable of absorbing 1.8 times its weight in moisture. When wet, it returns to a sawdust-like (or kinako-like?) texture.
