However, many old marking gauges have blades that are difficult to remove, and I've even broken one trying to pull it out straight. So, I always remove the blade, confirm it comes out, and then remove any rust. I've also confirmed that the rod and screws are not stiff. The blade tightness is a matter of personal preference, so I haven't adjusted it.
