Description
This ceramic pot (kame) features two powerfully embossed five-clawed dragons chasing and attempting to grasp a flaming pearl. Auspicious cloud patterns, believed to be zuiun (auspicious clouds), are carved above and below.

A flaming pearl is a wish-fulfilling jewel (nyoi hoju) adorned with flames, often seen in Buddhist statue decorations.
In Buddhism, the wish-fulfilling jewel is said to grant wishes and remove calamities. Flames symbolize the light emitted by Buddhas, possessing the power to calm human desires and dispel misfortune. The flaming pearl is a jewel surrounded by flames, and the motif of dragons chasing and grasping it is found in crafts and paintings.

Representative pots and jars decorated with dragons and pearls are known as century eggs pots (pidan hu). The dragons on commonly circulated century egg pots of that era typically had four or three claws, making five-clawed dragons a special feature.
In Chinese history, the number of dragon claws strictly represented a hierarchical system, with five claws being the symbol of the highest authority and status, permitted only for the emperor.

Century egg pots are large ceramic jars used for the production and transportation of century eggs, a Chinese delicacy made by preserving duck eggs. Current production is limited, and these items are not made for their original purpose. Including antique and collectible items circulated from that era, they are now used for practical purposes such as garden decor, goldfish bowls, lotus pots, and planters.

The pot being offered is not from that era and may have been created as a special craft in later times.

Approximate dimensions and weight are as follows:
Outer rim diameter: 31 cm, Inner diameter: 26.5 cm /
Height: 26.5 cm, Base diameter: 20.5 cm /
Weight: 4.8 kg /

While the pot shows signs of dirt and scratches, there are almost no noticeable chips or cracks. After filling the pot with water to near the brim and leaving it overnight, no leaks or seepage were observed.

The size of this pot is smaller than commonly circulated century egg pots of that era. It is unclear whether it was made as a century egg pot, its period of production, or its country/region of origin. However, it is a striking and impressive century egg? pot, decorated with two majestic five-clawed dragons chasing and grasping a flaming pearl along with zuiun.
It would likely complement garden and flower bed decor. It can also be utilized for growing aquatic plants, as a bowl for goldfish or medaka, and more.
