The benefits of rice husks include soil improvement (improved aeration, better drainage, soil softening), heat and moisture retention, weed suppression, silica supply, and recyclability as a resource. Rice husks are a readily available material that can be obtained for free, and their major advantage is their diverse functions that improve soil physics and promote crop growth.
Main Benefits
Soil Improvement Effects:
Improved Aeration and Drainage: The gaps in rice husks supply air to the soil and improve drainage.
Soil Softening: Especially when mixed with clay soil, it softens the soil and makes it easier for roots to grow.
Improved Water Retention (after charring): Rice husk charcoal made from rice husks improves soil water retention and provides a habitat for soil microorganisms.
Heat and Moisture Retention Effects:
Stabilized Ground Temperature: Spreading on the ground surface protects the soil from sunlight and outside air, suppressing rapid changes in ground temperature.
Moisture Retention: Suppresses moisture evaporation from the ground surface and prevents soil from drying out.
Weed Suppression Effect:
By covering the ground surface, it blocks sunlight and suppresses the growth of weeds.
Silica Supply:
Rice husks are rich in silica, which is said to strengthen stems and leaves when absorbed by crops.
Value as a Resource:
Since large quantities are produced every year, it is a reliable material that can be used as an alternative to finite natural resources.
In addition to being a soil conditioner, it can also be used for various purposes such as livestock bedding and drainage materials.
