About Shisa (Lion-dogs)
In Okinawa, we call these lion-dogs Shisa. For generations, they have been cherished for their ability to gaze afar from their resting place, warding off misfortune and evil spirits, and attracting happiness.
The culture of Shisa is said to have traveled from the Middle East, through the Silk Road, into China, and then to Okinawa during the Ryukyu trade era. There is a theory that the origin of Shisa dates back to the Sphinx statues of ancient Egypt.
