Sanshin Tuning Pegs and Bridge - Made of Ivory (Mammoth) - Miyako Woodcraft Original

This listing is for 3 Sanshin *karakui* (tuning pegs) and a *uma* (bridge). They are made of ivory (mammoth).

These are original items from Miyako Woodcraft in Miyakojima, Okinawa. They were included with a Yaeyama blackwood Sanshin I purchased quite some time ago.

The ivory (mammoth) *karakui* were too conspicuous for a beginner, so I replaced them with ebony ones. The *uma* has been used a few times, but mostly only for comparison with bamboo *uma* and others.

As Miyako Woodcraft explains, the ivory (mammoth) *uma* produces a very soft tone. However, this impression is based on use with an artificial skin head or a reinforced skin head that is stretched very tightly. The perception of tone varies from person to person, so I will refrain from making definitive statements.

I do not know the selling price of the ivory *karakui*. For reference, each *karakui* weighed approximately 30g.

The ivory (mammoth) *uma* is priced at 5,500 yen. It is likely difficult to purchase either of these items currently.

Photo 5 shows a comparison with regular ebony *karakui*, and Photo 9 shows a comparison with a regular bamboo *uma*. Photo 11 shows a chip(?) on the tip of a *karakui*, but it does not affect use.

There is a high probability that the *karakui* (tuning pegs) will not fit the *karakui* holes (guide holes) of your Sanshin. You will be at a loss if you purchase them, so please be very careful.

I am unsure of the selling price for ivory (mammoth) *karakui* (tuning pegs), so I have set this as an auction.

While real ivory cannot be sold, mammoth ivory is from an extinct animal, so there are no issues with its sale. Quoted from the Miyako Woodcraft website.
