The 50 series appeared in 1977 as a passenger car incorporating improvements such as enhanced safety through automatic doors, to replace aging older passenger cars.
They were used in various regions across the country, excluding Hokkaido, mainly in local urban areas.
The car body was painted in a single Red No. 2 color and was affectionately known as the Red Train.
The Ohofu 50 is a brake van equipped with a crew compartment and toilet, and was connected in large numbers at both ends and in the middle of formations.
