Description
A wonderfully ornate vintage West German table clock with strong Baroque, Rococo and Gothic Revival influences. This small mechanical clock has an elaborate antique brass-tone finish with dimensional cherubs, scrolling foliage, floral garlands, columns and architectural openwork surrounding the clock face. The round dial features black Roman numerals, decorative gold-tone hands and an intricate black-and-gold center. WEST GERMANY is printed at the bottom of the dial. This is a traditional mechanical wind-up clock, not a battery-operated clock. The original-style winding key is inserted at the back, where there is also a fast/slow regulator for adjusting the movement. The clock was wound and tested for approximately two hours and kept accurate time throughout the test. It has not been tested continuously for a full day or over multiple days, so longer-term timekeeping accuracy and running duration are unknown and are not guaranteed. The ornate cast-metal case has a warm aged brass/bronze appearance with natural patina and surface wear from age. The detailed cherub figures, floral swags, scrollwork and classical columns give it the appearance of a much earlier European decorative clock while its West Germany marking places its manufacture in the postwar West German period. Based on its construction and comparable examples, this piece appears consistent with mid-century West German decorative clocks, circa 1950s–1960s. Similar clocks are variously described as Baroque, Roco
