Signed Art Pottery Vase Tenmoku Black Ash Tan Baluster Dated 2009 Stoneware
N/A
Signed and dated on the foot in brushed iron, with the year written as 09. A date on a studio pot is worth more than most collectors realise, because it turns an anonymous object into a fixed point in somebody's working life. You can look for other pots from the same year and build a group. The glaze is doing the hard thing. A tenmoku black on the lower body runs up into an ash toned tan at the shoulder, and where they meet the black has broken into fingers and drips rather than a hard line. That break is not painted. It is the two glazes fluxing into each other at temperature, and the potter controls it only by where the pots sit in the kiln and how thickly the glaze is laid. Every one comes out differently. Nobody can make this one twice. The form is a classic baluster: a swollen body pulling into a waisted neck and out again to a wide flared rim. It is the shape thrown by every potter learning to pull a neck, which means the ones you see are either student work or the work of somebody who has done it ten thousand times. The wall thickness here is even all the way up and the rim runs true. Studio pottery from the 2000s is the cheapest it will ever be. The market currently pays for names it already knows, and everything else is priced as decoration. Condition: Used. No chips, no cracks and no crazing found. Glaze bright with the natural variation of a reduction fired drip. Signed and dated 09 on the unglazed foot. Interior clean. Ships from Baltimore via FedEx within th
