Andrea by Sadek Blue and White Vase Ovoid Scrolling Lotus Porcelain

The label is still on it. Andrea by Sadek, the importer mark that put a generation of Chinese export style porcelain into American houses from the 1970s onward, and the gold foil oval survives on maybe one piece in twenty because it is the first thing a dishwasher takes off.  The decoration is a scrolling lotus, the pattern Chinese potters have run continuously since the Yuan dynasty, and it is worth knowing why it lasted. A lotus scroll has no top and no bottom. The stem loops around the body and closes on itself, so the painter never has to solve the problem of where the design ends. You can paint it on any shape at any scale and it works.  This is a rounded ovoid with a short straight collar, the cobalt laid on under the glaze in two strengths so the flower heads read darker than the leaves. Around the shoulder runs a formal ruyi band, the cloud collar border, which is the second oldest device in the whole tradition.  Blue and white is the safest thing you can put in a room you are not sure about. It has survived seven hundred years of changing taste by never once being the loudest object present.
