Eric Clapton Homage Pickup Tourus "Blackie"
Blackie, Eric Clapton's legendary and arguably the world's most famous Stratocaster, was meticulously assembled by him. The revelation that its heart – the pickups – were 1974 gray bobbins, discovered through disassembly and analysis by Fender, sent shockwaves through guitar enthusiasts and players alike.
This original Blackie was retired after the 1985 tour, but Clapton himself described it as possessing a mysterious charm that one might encounter only once in a lifetime. The tone that produced his famous performances and iconic phrases, combined with his playing skill, was described as dry. It featured the flat frequency response characteristic of the 70s, with a sharp edge, a shorter sustain, and exquisite drive from amplifier settings. This sound, entirely different from his current signature models, was incredibly appealing, even distinct from his signature woman tone. This product aims to recreate that very sound.
Reference sound sources include the live album Just One Night, his first and last live album, and the 1985 Live Aid video. Particular attention was paid to the nuances of the middle and bridge half-tone positions, frequently used in Just One Night.
The amplifiers used at the time were a Music Man for Just One Night and a JCM800 for Live Aid. For headphone use with the UAFX Lion68 and when using a tube amplifier, a booster was employed to lightly push the tone.
The neck pickup is based on the flat and dry tone of the 70s, while incorporating the slight drive on the wound strings around the 12th fret, reminiscent of 60s Stratocasters.
It possesses a raw sensitivity that directly expresses the player's nuances, delivering a crystal-clear tone when clean. This makes it an excellent choice not only for Clapton fans but also for anyone seeking the sound of '70s gray bobbins.
