◽️ Among celadon pieces from the same era and kiln, Juko celadon, with its form suited to dimly lit tea rooms and its small, refined foot, is exceptionally rare.

While many celadon pieces from the Tong'an kiln in museums have a plump, almost utilitarian appearance, the transmitted Juko celadon pieces in art museums are extremely thinly made and distinctly different from utilitarian ware. The craftsmanship of the box and the use of materials also reflect the discerning taste of tea connoisseurs of the time.

I was drawn to the Juko celadon at the Idemitsu Museum of Art and asked a long-established tea ceremony utensil dealer to find one for me.

✴︎ My first encounter was at a long-established tea ceremony utensil shop near Nihonbashi and Kyobashi, where I was invited for tea by my grandfather. Even as a child, I was allowed to touch it with my small hands. At that time, Korean and Japanese ceramics were very popular. A proper Ido-style tea bowl would cost from ¥30,000,000, a masterpiece Oribe sake ewer from ¥25,000,000, and even a single tea scoop was no less than ¥5,000,000.

✴︎ The split-patterned shifuku (tea caddy pouch), the gold-powder inscribed box, and the Sanada himo (cord) on the box are all precious period pieces, each with commensurate loosening and wear due to age. These are testaments to its history as a transmitted piece. It is handled with extreme care, as if it were a precious gem. Those who do not understand how to handle such items or have different values are kindly asked to refrain from purchasing.
