This is a Kagura mask [male mask].
It is a Kuchi-e mask from the Iwami Kagura style.
Kagura originally began with ancient people dancing to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul, and it is said that this ritual of soul-purifying dances gave rise to various Shinto ritual performances.
A mold is made from clay, Japanese paper is carefully layered, a mixture of gofun (oyster shell powder) is applied, and then colored.
*Persimmon tannin is used as an insect repellent.
It has a unique smell when held in the mouth.
