Clematis Flower
The clematis, originally called Tessen or Tessen-ren, was introduced to Japan from China during the Muromachi period. Its flowers are white or purple, and it has been cherished as a noble flower symbolizing beauty of the heart and purity.
It has been stylized in many lacquerware and dyed goods since ancient times, and can be considered a quintessential Japanese flower.
In depicting the clematis flower, great care was taken to express its purity and nobility.
Through the hands of Shunpo, a master maki-e artist of Aizu lacquerware,
using the unique keshikin (genuine gold) powder of Aizu lacquerware, the flower petals are raised higher, and mother-of-pearl is used for the flower's center, a technique that is among the finest in Aizu lacquerware.
We believe that the Clematis in Aizu lacquerware will fully convey its timeless beauty to everyone.
