Thank you for viewing.
This is an Ikoma lacquerware bowl with a glossy vermilion finish and a gentle touch. While many of their works have a plump form, this piece with a foot is a rare find.

Ikoma lacquerware was founded by father and son Hiroshi and Chikao Ikoma after World War II in Akita City. They provided guidance and improvements for lacquerware in Taiwan and Ryukyu (Okinawa Prefecture), and this is a new style of lacquerware incorporating those techniques.
Father Hiroshi was invited to the Okinawa Prefectural Crafts Guidance Center as an engineer to teach techniques, making significant contributions to the development of Ryukyu lacquerware. In 1931, he formed the Okinawa Lacquerware Cooperative and expanded sales nationwide under the brand name Benbo.

This is a beautiful lacquerware based on the vibrant vermilion unique to the southern islands of Okinawa. Unfortunately, the studio seems to have closed down, making it impossible to obtain these pieces now. We hope to pass this on to those who are looking for it or are interested.
