[What is Tsugaru Lacquerware?] *Excerpt
Base Material:
Local woods such as Tsugaru cypress are used to create a durable base.
Technique: The primary technique is Ken-dashi kawari-nuri, where patterns are created by layering and then polishing colored lacquer, allowing for complex and vibrant expressions.
Process:
Specialized craftsmen divide the work between wood preparation and lacquer art processes. The entire process can involve over 50 steps and take more than two months to complete.
Importance:
It is the only traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in Aomori Prefecture, and in 2017, it was also designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property.
Tsugaru lacquerware is highly valued today as a practical and artistic craft that combines its robustness with the profound beauty of lacquer.
