Hakoseko Antique (Showa 19 / 1944 - Wedding Attire Accessory)
This is a hakoseko, a traditional accessory for Japanese wedding attire from the Showa era, made of pure silk with crane embroidery. It is from the same period as the movie In This Corner of the World.
I purchased it at an antique shop because I was drawn to vintage items. According to the shop owner, there was a note from a previous owner inside the paulownia box that read, Showa 19 (1944) Hakoseko.
As it is from the Showa era, there is some discoloration due to age, but there are almost no noticeable stains on either the outside or inside, making it a beautiful piece for an antique item.
As shown in the third image, the inside of the handmade thick paper is lined with newspaper with old Japanese characters that read Northern Area War Situation XX, evoking the era.
One of the floral ornaments on the silver kanzashi (hairpin) is missing, but this is not noticeable when worn.
One part of the lid of the paulownia box is coming off and has been secured with tape. It can be easily repaired with glue, but I have left it as is, thinking it adds to its character.
I believe this accessory would be perfect for those who love antique kimonos.
