This round tray features a beautiful red flower motif delicately painted in the center of the black lacquer finish. The sides are elegantly adorned with decorative turning by a skilled woodturner.

This lacquerware is made in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is also known as Yamanaka lacquerware. Yamanaka has a long history of woodturners, and it boasts the largest production volume in Japan for turned woodenware.

A key characteristic of Yamanaka lacquerware, which utilizes wood grain to express a natural texture, is the tatekitori (vertical wood cutting) method, where the shape of the vessel is formed in the direction the tree grew.

This results in robust lacquerware that is resistant to warping due to drying. Through decorative turning, such as sensuji (thousand-line) and arasuji (rough-line) patterns applied to the wood, Yamanaka lacquerware is born with unique attention to detail.
