This is an Ekirei (station bell) from Oki Province.
The Ekirei was a bell issued by the imperial court to officials on official business trips during Japan's ancient Ritsuryo period.
It is believed to have been created in conjunction with the establishment of the ekiba (station horse) and denma (courier horse) systems by Emperor Kotoku's Imperial Edict of Kaishin, issued on January 1, 646 (Taika 2). Officials would ring this bell at stations to summon yōshi (porters) and station horses, and to have horses brought to them with the station bell.
The actual surviving Ekirei is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and is known as the Oki Province Ekirei.
This Ekirei is preserved in the Okike Treasure Hall, adjacent to Tamawakasunomikoto Shrine in Okinoshima Town, Shimane Prefecture.
