Antique Bruges Doily with Bobbin Lace, Depicting an Ancient Woman Carrying a Vase on Her Head and a Bouquet of Flowers
19th Century Antique, Bruges, Belgium
Exquisite Bobbin Lace and Needlework Oval Doily.
Includes a blue linen fabric for framing backgrounds.
A scene of a woman walking with a bouquet in one hand and a pot on her head,
beautifully depicted with whitework.
Is she carrying a water jug or an oil pot on her head?
It resembles a scene from ancient Greek mythology,
and her attire, with cloth draped over her head and shoulders, is also classical.
Whether she is a goddess, a nymph, a citizen, or a servant,
it conveys the customs and traditions of the time.
Standing on a terracotta-like pedestal/flower stand,
two ribbons (stems) hang from the bouquet (or fruit?) in her left hand, swaying three-dimensionally.
Areas like the bandana and waist tie are assembled like appliqué.
It features a three-dimensional effect with loose and tight half-stitch openwork
and outline embroidery in openwork.
The bridge spanning the space is meticulously woven stitch by stitch.
A gentle, elegant pale cream ivory.
A tone with a slight yellowish, grassy hue,
characteristic of antiques.
It has a soft, smooth, moist feel, yet also a crispness and dryness,
suggesting the material is cotton or a cotton-linen blend.
