Roji Associates is a manufacturer that inherits the tradition of Nambu ironware while pursuing new possibilities. Mr. Hisao Iwashimizu, who was fascinated by Nambu ironware, which has a history dating back to the Heian period and is a source of pride for his hometown, established the Nambu ironware studio Roji Associates with his brother after studying at a long-established Nambu ironware manufacturer. The company name Roji is derived from 露地 (roji), meaning the path leading to the tea room.

In the tea ceremony, walking through the roji leading to the tea room is said to allow one to savor the surrounding nature and atmosphere, clear the mind of distractions, and prepare the heart for receiving tea. The scenery surrounding the roji is said to be tranquil yet allow one to feel the beauty of nature, and Roji Associates was named with the desire to express the spirit of the roji in Nambu ironware.

Mr. Iwashimizu states, Japanese traditional crafts have two worlds: the gorgeous beauty represented by Kyoto, and the ultimate simplicity advocated by Sen no Rikyu. Roji Associates aims for the latter world. While utilizing the characteristic heavy texture of Nambu ironware, they continue to challenge new possibilities for Nambu ironware through new designs that incorporate modern sensibilities.
