Men's Summer Kaku Obi (Square Sash) by Ken Yamashita, National Art Academy Member, Raw Silk, Itajime Technique
This is a representative work by Yamashita, featuring the Itajime technique, a form of warp ikat. The soft, natural ecru base color is beautifully accented by varying shades of indigo and ikat patterns, creating a sense of movement that is unusual for woven fabric. The gold-brown striped sections, which tighten the overall look, incorporate a woven technique called Roton (a type of brocade) at regular intervals. This changes its appearance depending on the angle of light, adding depth to the obi fabric.

Purchased several years ago at a kimono shop in Aoyama.
