Born on January 25, 1938 (Showa 13) as the eldest son of Kotaro and Kashiku Onodera in Ishimori Town, Tome District, Miyagi Prefecture (later Nakada Town Ishimori, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture). He had an older sister, two younger brothers, and a younger sister, making him the fifth child. As mentioned below, he initially aspired to be a film director, but his older sister, Yoshie Onodera, who was often ill and unable to go out, would have her school experiences and observations of the outside world drawn for her, which is said to be the origin of his manga.

During his time at Ishimori Elementary School (now Tome City Ishimori Elementary School), he enjoyed reading comic books and magazines. One day, he encountered Osamu Tezuka's Shin Takarajima (New Treasure Island) and was deeply impressed, becoming a huge fan of Tezuka's work thereafter.

In 1950 (Showa 25), when he became a junior high school student, he sent a fan letter to Osamu Tezuka and received a reply, which further fueled his passion for manga. In his second year, he submitted a four-panel comic strip to the Mainichi Chugakusei Shimbun (Mainichi Junior High School Newspaper) and it was accepted. From then on, he became obsessed with submitting his work. He gathered neighborhood children to form a research group and created a club magazine called Sumijuku Itteki (A Drop of Ink) (which ceased publication after two issues). He was also responsible for critiques in Manga Shonen, a magazine that solicited submissions.
