Shohoku Keigetsu (1876-1963) was a Japanese painter. His ink wash paintings, considered the essence of Nanga (Southern School painting), were unparalleled, and his unique style was highly acclaimed, earning him the Order of Cultural Merit in 1958. He was also described as the Last Literati Painter, building upon the precise and upright depiction characteristic of the Kazan Watanabe and Tsubaki Chintzan lineage, while fully incorporating the trend of modern sketch-based painting. His work is distinguished by a lyrical and elegant style, underpinned by his knowledge of Chinese classics and poetry.
