[Kawai Gyokudo (1873-1957)]
A Japanese-style painter active from the Meiji to Showa periods. Born in Gifu Prefecture. His given name was Shojiro. He initially studied the Kano school, and later established his unique artistic style by fusing realism based on natural observation with lyrical expression. He was active primarily at the Japan Art Institute (Inten) and held an important position in the modern Japanese painting world. He was a member of the Japan Art Academy and received the Order of Culture. He left behind many works depicting landscapes, rural scenery, and the nature of the four seasons.

Gyokudo incorporated the style of the Kano school on the foundation of the Maruyama-Shijo school, opening up a new realm from traditional landscape painting to modern landscape art. He also played a central role in the Tokyo art scene and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1940.
Gyokudo, who deeply loved the mountains and rivers of Japan, painted the nature of the four seasons and rural landscapes, along with the people who lived there, with rich emotion. The world created by Gyokudo, which can be called the original landscape of old Japan, evokes nostalgia in the viewer and makes them realize anew the beauty of Japanese nature.
