Joichi Hoshi 1913-1979
Born in Niigata Prefecture
A printmaker known as the printmaker of trees for his numerous works featuring trees as motifs. After graduating from Tainan Normal School, he worked in elementary education for 13 years in Taiwan. After the war, he returned to his hometown of Niigata from Taiwan and learned stencil printing. He then enrolled in the Western Painting Department at Musashino Art School, graduating at the age of 42. After graduation, he returned to printmaking and exhibited his works at the Kokugakai (National Art Exhibition) and the Japan Print Association Exhibition. From 1935, he continued to exhibit at international exhibitions such as the Tokyo International Print Biennale and the São Paulo International Print Biennale, gaining worldwide recognition. While he used abstract expressions in his early works, he gradually began to depict motifs such as stars and horizons, eventually focusing on trees. The trees depicted by Hoshi, imbued with a unique tension and mystique, are not specific trees in reality but rather spiritual trees as symbols, evoking a sense of offering prayers to God. His representative works include the Star Series and Tree Series.
