Junichi Nakahara
Painter, Illustrator, Fashion Researcher, Magazine Editor of the Showa Period
Moved to Tokyo in 1925 to study art. Around 1932, while attending the Japan Fine Arts School, he became an illustrator for the girls' magazine Shōjo no Tomo and gained immense popularity for his depictions of girls with large eyes and small lips. During World War II, his work was banned under pressure from the military. In 1946, he launched the quarterly fashion magazine Soleil, which was supported by girls for its delicate illustrations of beautiful girls in the style of Yumeji Takehisa. In 1947, he founded Himawari Co., Ltd., launching Himawari and Junior Soleil, and was also active in fashion design, lyric writing, and musical direction. He battled illness from the mid-1950s. After his death, Himawari was reissued. In 2000, the Junichi Nakahara Memorial Museum opened in Kawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture.
