Mannenzori (everlasting sandals) have been used as footwear for agricultural work for about 50 years, as they could be easily washed clean of mud stains. At the time, they were called Tomoo Swallow Zori. The upper part was a single piece of molded rubber, with the strap and the footbed connected, and I believe the sole was made of sponge.
