Japanese Literati Work: Fan Painting with Chinese Poetry, Signature, and Seals
This fan painting, created in the late Edo period during the Koka 3rd year (1846), is a work of Chinese poetry by a Japanese literati. ★s80401
The elegant Chinese poetry, which praises spring scenery, landscapes, and plum blossoms, is beautifully arranged along the curves of the fan, conveying a profound worldview of literati taste.
The signature includes the literati's pseudonym, and two seals, one in red and one in white, are impressed, attesting to its value as a unique, authentic piece by a calligrapher of that era.
Fan painting was a particularly favored format in late Edo period literati culture, produced as a gift or an elegant plaything for appreciating poetry, calligraphy, and painting as a unified whole.
This piece was originally part of a folding screen from the Edo period, from which it was cut. The original backing paper from that era remains attached to the reverse side.
This is a unique piece that allows you to feel the texture and the breath of the times, characteristic of works originally attached to folding screens.
